GENERAL FLIGHT PROGRESS TEST (GFPT)
The first 50 hours of your pilot training is the most important flying you will ever do. It is during this time you learn the basic skills, control techniques and mental attitudes, which form the foundation for your future flying. Incorrect techniques, misinformation and unnecessary limitations learned during this period are difficult and costly to correct later.
During training for your General Flight Progress Test (GFPT) – the first stage in all pilot training - you will learn to take off, fly level, climb, turn, descend and land. You will learn how to loop, roll and wing over; how to sideslip and spin, and how to recover from a stall in ANY attitude. By the end of the course you will be able to point your aircraft straight up into the sky and hold it there until it stops - and you will know what to do next. You will be able to do all this with confidence because you will understand what is happening to the aircraft at all times and you will be in complete control.
In short, we will teach you how to fly – REALLY FLY!
To gain a GFPT, in addition to practical flight training, you need to pass a series of theory exams. To help you do this Red Baron Flight Training (RBFT) provides tutorial sessions at strategic intervals throughout the GFPT course. There are also detailed pre flight briefings and post flight debriefings with all instructional flights. On average you can expect to spend about two and a half hours with your instructor, for each lesson.
To be able to sit for the GFPT CASA requires you to have a minimum of 15hrs dual flight training (i.e. training with an instructor) and 5 hrs solo flight training (i.e. flying as pilot in command).
In designing our GFPT syllabus we have gone beyond this CASA minimum and created a course based on what we have found to be the average amount of training required by the average student to achieve competence in the skills required to fly an aircraft. This is closer to 18hrs dual and 9hrs solo.
Additionally, to improve the general standard of our graduates we have added basic aerobatic training and advance flight techniques training to our curriculum. These advanced components comprise a further 12hrs dual and 3hrs solo and are spread throughout the course. These additional components go way beyond CASA’s minimum requirements, however by training in this way your confidence is built up early and you achieve a higher level of competence sooner. No other flying school in Australia can offer you this kind of flight training.
All training at RBFT is conducted in the Robin 2160. The Robin 2160 is a fixed wing, bubble canopy, high performance training aircraft. Post graduate training in the Pitts S2A aerobatic bi-plane is also available.
As indicated before, the RBFT GFPT course is not minimum standard flight training; it is a high performance pilot training course designed to teach you superior flying skill and instil confidence in your abilities as a pilot. You will graduate with the ability to operate your aircraft in three dimensions, to fly aerobatics, to spin and recover, to fly all “normal” manoeuvres to a high standard and confidently carry passengers whilst doing so.
